Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV takes place before the events of the main game (by way of flashbacks) and during. It is a short anime series, each episode lasting around 10-20 minutes. The episodes are available to watch for free on YouTube.

A few of the episodes in Brotherhood give small backstories on each of the main characters.

Prompto’s Episode is Episode 2: Dogged Runner.

The episode starts out in the present with Prompto driving the Regalia. (this episode and the end of Kingsglaive are the only times you see Prompto drive)

Prompto swerves to avoid hitting a puppy in the road. After running to it to make sure it’s okay, he realizes it’s injured and calls to the others to get him some first aid supplies. While tending to the puppy’s injury he is reminded of a time in his youth. The episode then proceeds to do a flashback where the bulk of the episode takes place.

We then see a younger Prompto in school. We see that Prompto was a loner growing up, spending most of his time with his digital camera. Even at this age Prompto had an interest in photography. He appears to have no friends in school and keeps to himself mostly.

Prompto attends the same school that Noctis does, even seeing him in the hallways.

Prompto comes home to an empty house each day. Nothing is ever said of his foster/adoptive parents. No one knows if they just worked a lot to take care of him, or just left money for him to take care of himself and had little interest in him. In the Prologue Parting Ways, they weren’t even home to see him off on his trip with Noctis. He does live in a decent house though and is able to go to a good school.

Since Prompto’s parents are gone a lot, they appear to leave money for Prompto to purchase fast food on the way home from school. We never see any meals left for him so it’s assumed his diet is mainly made up of take out.

On the way home from school one day Prompto comes across a injured puppy. He takes the puppy home and nurses it back to health. He tries to take pictures of the puppy to put up flyers in case it belongs to someone, but the puppy seems to have issues with it’s picture being taken, often spilling it’s bowl or causing some sort of distraction.

Prompto finds purpose in taking care of this puppy, often rushing home from school to get home to it. He even comes up with a name for it “Chibi” (Tiny)

After a few days, Prompto wakes up to find the puppy has left. He goes searching for it, to no avail.

We then find out that the puppy Prompto was taking care of belongs to Lady Lunafreya and her name is Pryna. The handkerchief that Prompto wrapped around Pryna’s injured leg has his name on it. Gentiana then says they will find out who Prompto is.

Prompto finds a letter in the mailbox addressed to him from Lunafreya, thanking him for taking care of Pryna. She explains that she sent Pryna to see Noctis. Lunafreya assumes that Prompto and Noctis are friends and she asks him to continue to be good friends with him despite the fact that he’s usually busy.

Prompto takes this as a sign to become friends with Noctis. The next day he tries to talk to Noctis but ends up tripping and falling in front of him. When Noctis goes to help him up, he comments on how he’s “heavy”, startling Prompto. (I don’t think Noctis meant to be mean with this) Noctis then takes his leave as the school bell rings. After Noctis leaves, Prompto comments saying he knew he couldn’t be friends with Noctis, but then decides he will becomes friends with Noctis no matter what.

Using Lady Lunafreya’s letter as motivation, he begins making lifestyle changes to lose weight. He takes pictures of himself in the mirror each day, starts cutting back on fast food, and begins jogging.

Eventually he’s eating salads over fast food, jogging even when it’s pouring down rain outside, and asking his class mates for tips on becoming a good runner. This continues until we see Prompto getting ready for his first day of high school. We then see how much of a transformation Prompto has undergone. He takes one final picture in the mirror before putting on his uniform and heading to school.

Prompto introduces himself to Noctis on the first day of school acting like they haven’t met before. Noctis remembers him though and calls him on this. This is the beginning of their friendship.

After this, the episode goes back to the present where we see the puppy Prompto was tending to, run into the woods to meet up with it’s mother and siblings. Prompto then gets back in the car with the others (with Ignis driving this time lol) and Noctis (who slept through the entire thing) finally wakes up. As they ride off, Prompto then asks if he can meet Lady Lunafreya when they get to Altissia to which Noctis responds “why wouldn’t you?”

The episode then ends with them riding off down the road.
