Miasma means a vapor or gas.

Sublimation means the transition of a substance from solid to gas without becoming a liquid.

The clones undergoing sublimation
The Magitek Infantry was created by Research Chief Verstael Besithia. They were made by sublimating daemons (or humans infected with the starcourge) into a miasma, putting that miasma into a Magitek Core and then inserting that core into a Trooper. The core then powers the Troopers like a generator.
At first Besithia was sublimating daemons and using that as the fuel but it was proving unstable. He then began to use humans that were already infected with the Starscourge. The infected adults though still had a sense of self. (the game actually uses the wrong term “Ego Deaths” for this. Ego Death means “loss of self-identity” but then goes on to say they kept their sense of self) Trying to find a way around this, he decided to then start injecting babies with the plasmodia. This was proving too slow though (breeding) and so he then began cloning himself.
Magitek Soldiers are an enemy that you will face throughout the main game. In episode Prompto you will face them as well.
There are many types of Imperial enemies. But there is a difference in them. One type has a core, and the other type does not. Most of the ones with cores will have “Magitek” in their name. A Magitek core looks like this:
Magitek Cores:

Think of them as a battery. The core powers the trooper.
The miasma that is inside the core is weak to light so the Troopers are encased in lightproof armor.
Below are two clips from Episode Ardyn talking about Daemons and their sensitivity to light:
You’ll also know if they have cores cause they can clearly be seen on their body:

These cores can also be removed or ejected by the trooper and are capable of self destructing. Many troopers in the main game will eject these out of their body (or manually pull them out) and then try to blow you up with them.

Shock Troopers (pictured above) will pop their cores out of them and then start slowly walking towards their target. Once they get within range they will self destruct.
Other types of Magitek will pull these cores out of themselves and then get in melee range of you to self destruct, often lunging themselves at Noctis and holding him in place.

The Troopers with cores are more mechanical looking:

A lot of fans have it in their heads that there are “Prompto’s” behind the masks or inside of these troopers. There are no bodies inside of Magitek Troopers. All the soldiers are mechanical. In the pictures above you can clearly see their joints are ball joints…there are no bodies inside of them.
They also have masks that can be blown off of them and shattered into pieces. As you can see, no faces behind them.

Magitek Troopers when attacking will make screeching noises and make wailing noises when dying:
The other types of Imperial enemies that do not have cores are comparable to robots. They can not self destruct. They also do not have “Magitek” in their name. Most of the ones that are like this seem to use firearms as well, such as the Imperial Riflemen, Battery Solders, and Imperial Snipers, etc. These types also have different armor then the ones with cores and do not have masks. They are also more humanoid in appearance and do not have visible mechanical joints.
