Photo Ops are small side quests where Prompto will ask Noctis if he can take a picture of the group somewhere, usually near some sort of landmark. Most Photo Ops in game happen while driving around in the Regalia. There are also Photo Ops that can trigger while on the Royal Vessel and while walking around Altissia.
Most photo ops require Noctis to be in a certain area near the photo op for them to trigger. Think of it like a radius on a map, once you enter the area, a small dialogue scene will trigger where Prompto will ask if he can take a picture. Photo Ops are completely optional and you do have the ability to turn them down, they do give experience and help level Prompto’s photography skill though.
Prompto will only ask to do photo ops during the daytime and if you agree to a photo op but arrive when it’s dark, Prompto will mention there not being enough light and to try again later.
Below are pictures of each photo op. The first shot will show where on the map the photo op triggered, the second shot will show the area to take the shot, and the last picture will show the resulting photo. Keep in mind that since most trigger areas for photo ops are a wide radius, you don’t have to be in the exact same spot I was for them to trigger. I am just showing where it triggered for me just in case you need an idea of a general area of where to be at.
Main Land:
There are 12 photo ops that you can trigger while riding around in the Regalia and one on foot. Most require you to reach a certain chapter before they will trigger. Two have unlock conditions and another is one that can be missed since it becomes unavailable after the fight with Titan.

From Chapter 3 onward.
Photo Op: Quay
From Chapter 3 onward.
Photo Op: Volcano
From Chapter 3 onward.
Photo Op: Lestallum
From Chapter 3 onward. Complete the tour with Iris in Lestallum, “A Stroll for Two” for this to trigger. This one can also be done by doing a Chapter Select to a later Chapter (any after Chapter 4) since the game will assume the tour was completed already.
Photo Op: Waterfall
From Chapter 3 onward.
Photo Op: Disc
From Chapter 3 to 4. This one must be done before the end of Chapter 4. After the fight with Titan it becomes unavailable.
Photo Op: Quarry
From Chapter 4 onward.
Photo Op: Battlefield
From Chapter 5 onward.
Photo Op: Ranch
From Chapter 6 onward. You must also complete the quest “A Behemoth Undertaking”, the quest to kill Deadeye, for this Photo Op to trigger.
Photo Op: Lakefront
From Chapter 7 onward. You can hold on to this one and chose to come back and take it after Gladio rejoins the party.
Photo Op: Mascot
From Chapter 8 onward.
Photo Op: Crag
From Chapter 8 onward.
Photo Op: Beacon
From Chapter 8 onward. This is the only one on the main land that triggers on foot. It will trigger while walking around outside the house at Cape Caem.
Altissia:
There are four Photo Ops in Altissia. These can be triggered by walking around the city on foot. All photo ops in Altissia become available in Chapter 9.

Royal Vessel:
There are six Photo Ops that can trigger while riding around in the Royal Vessel out on the ocean. All Royal Vessel Photo Ops become available after gaining access to the Royal Vessel in Chapter 09.

Photo Op: Chimney
Photo Op: Horizon
Photo Op: Gate
Repeatable Photo Ops
These Photo Ops do not have any trigger zones for them and are not quests. Also unlike the other Photo Ops, you won’t be able to view/save the photo after taking it. To see the photos from these Photo Ops, you’ll have to stay at a camp or hotel to view your photos.
Unlike the other Photos Ops, these are repeatable, meaning you can keep taking a picture at them.
